A new Mario & Luigi game has been announced and it's planned to release Spring 2016. This is Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam for the Nintendo 3DS. It takes place when Luigi accidentally knocks over a book that releases Paper Mario characters into the Mario & Luigi universe. I don't know which series this should be placed in. It's titled Mario & Luigi but it has Paper Mario characters and other things. I believe it should be placed in both series.
